Roger Stone Demanding New Trial

WASHINGTON, February 14, 2020 — Roger Stone and his legal team are “requesting,” a new trial, while many on the Hill are claiming President Donald Trump used political pressure to help his friend.

The Washington Post was first to report the news on Friday, based on a sealed filing in Stone’s case. It’s unknown what Stone’s legal reasoning is for seeking a new trial. Trump has taken to social media to blast the jury foreperson in the case, based on her politics. Like all other trials, Stone’s lawyers had the opportunity to vet potential jurors for possible bias at the start of his trial.

Roger Stone was convicted in November of all seven counts against him, including lying to Congress and witness tampering. The prosecution issued a filing that recommended a 7-9 year prison sentence. But an angry tweet from Trump, caused Attorney General Barr to file a new proposal with less prison time. Following the change, the four career prosecutors who made the initial sentencing recommendation withdrew from Stone’s case. One of them resigned entirely from the Justice Department.

Prosecutors must respond to Stone’s motion by Feb. 18. It was unclear if the request for a new trial — Stone’s second attempt after the first was denied — would delay his scheduled Feb. 20 sentencing.
