Legal scholars called by Democrats say Trump has committed impeachable offenses

WASHINGTON – All three legal scholars called by Democrats to testify in the House Judiciary Committee’s first impeachment hearing all agreed that President Trump committed impeachable offenses by obstructing the House’s investigation and with his dealings with Ukraine.

The three witnesses offered their statements based on the House Intelligence Committee’s report, which alleges President Trump abused his power as he solicited foreign election interference for his own gain. The Democratic counsel refused to question the Republican witness, who in his opening statement was critical of the rushed nature of the inquiry, calling it dangerous.

Democrats using witnesses to drive bribery narrative in the impeachment process

The three Democratic witnesses include UNC Law Professor Michael Gerhardt, Harvard Law Professor Noah Feldman and Stanford Law Professor Pamela Karlan. The Democratic called witnesses made several strong statements. Professor Gerhardt said that Trump’s misconduct includes bribery, by soliciting a personal favor from a foreign leader in exchange for his “exercise of power,” and obstructing justice. He called this the worse misconduct of any prior president. Professor Feldman said that Trump committed impeachable high crimes and misdemeanors by abusing the office of the presidency.

Republican witness George Washington University Professor Jonathan Turley spoke out about the possible impeachment of President Trump. Turley previous testified during the investigation of former President Bill Clinton. Turley said that ” the abbreviated inquiry for Trump was problematic and puzzling because of witnesses who weren’t yet subpoenaed and the record was incomplete.” Turley said that what they leave behind in the wake of this scandal, will impact our Democracy for decades.

House Republicans attack Democratic called witnesses

House Republican Rep. Mark Meadows, took to Twitter and claimed Professor Feldman has been looking for any reason to impeach President Trump for 3 years now. Rep. Andy Biggs claims Professor Karlan made a false analogy to attack the President when she equated foreign aid to domestic disaster relief.

Rep. Doug Collins said that there were no fact witnesses at the hearing to move the inquiry onto the next phase. Karlan fired back saying “I would not speak about these things without reviewing the facts,” “I’m insulted by the suggestion that as a law professor, I don’t care about the facts.”

The committee will move forward with hearing testimony from the five other committees that have been investigating Trump – Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, Oversight, Ways and Means and Financial Services.
